My So Called Life

This is a rant. Be warned.

I’ve spent the last 5+ years of my life at an institute of higher learning. I went to class, I wrote papers, I even contributed every once in a while. I jumped around from major to major but my interest were always drawn to the humanities so it was there I stopped. I took wonderful classes on fun and exiting topics. My education was, for the most part decent, punctuated by the occasional evil math or science general ed class.

My Woes

So why am I rambling on? Especially on a blog supposedly devoted to the pursuit of all things pop-culture? Well, after my labor in the salt mines of college I stagger out on the other end with a completely useless set of academic credentials. All of my studies, my wonderful classes in modern humanities and film, were in essence a waste of time. Oh, I learned buckets full and was usually quite enlightened but this world we live in demands more shrewdness than the ability to pontificate about the latest Wes Anderson flick.

So here I am, degree pending and in the hunt of my “life career”. My choices with a humanities degree are limited to two options: become a full time student for the rest of my life pursuing degree after degree, or find a mediocre career doing something I only mildly tolerate and enjoy my love of culture and the arts in my spare time. That’s about it.

So Now What?

So my question remains; why do we have universities filled with loads of pointless degrees churning out hundred of graduates who end up working a 9-5 telemarketing job? Because there are still saps like me who refused to major in business just to rake in the dough. I plan on using this arsenal of info stored away in my gray matter to enlighten the world to the great value of “Arrested Development”, Woody Allen, and all things Simpsons.

So stand by as I validate my life’s work. It may not pay the bills but at least it keeps me from sitting on the street corner with a sign that reads, “will criticize the latest cultural trend for food”.

i don’t think you are correct in stating you only have two options. i have a degree and went to grad school and my choices are: go back to school to get phd and other degrees or find a job being a lab rat or a researcher. none of which sound appealing.

a lot of jobs don’t even look at what kind of degree you have, they just want to know you took the time to do it. at least that is what i hear.
