Bagels: The Food Time Forgot

Do you remember bagels? The circular little snack that was such a hit there in the 90s? I sure didn’t. Until I acquired a bag of these carb-crazy crafties and have now consumed two in an hour. Yum

The history of bagels is fascinating. With no Wiki consultation I’m just guessing that bagels first came about during the christian crusades. What better way to sustain troops moving across thousands of miles than with small rounds of compressed dough? Then when the soldiers made it to the Holy Land, they could dip them in kerosene and launch them at the Jews.

This is why so many Jewish people make bagels today. Its a statement against the bagel artillery their ancestors fought against. Flaming bagel bombs. Now we just call them bagels. We’ve definitely come full circle.

So, while you digest that, I’ll continue to digest my bagels….for at least the next seven years…
