Birthday Suit

Today is my 26th day of birth. 26 years ago today I popped out of my mother’s abdomen (surgical style) and burst into the bright 80s world of Alf, Small Wonder, and a non-vibrating Micheal J. Fox.

Reflecting today on past birthday celebrations, I’m reminded of a few that stick out in my memory as either awesome or, at best, note-worthy.

8th Birthday. I spent this happy day in my family’s old motor-home, bumping along the back roads of upstate New York. We were out east for my brother’s wedding but I was unaware of anything else but the fact that it was my birthday and I was SPECIAL. That night after the wedding reception I remember looking at the large pile of presents stacked up in the church foyer and thinking, “They finally get it. This is the adequate amount of booty”. I was sorely disappointed to learn later that, not only were the presents not intended for me, but that most boxes contained blenders and knife sets.

15th Birthday. This one’s a little more risque. It being August and my bed room being on the top floor of a non-air-conditioned home, I decided the night before my birthday that the only way I was going to get any sleep in that inferno was to sleep in…ahem…my birthday suit. The next morning as I blinked open my birthday eyes, it immediately occurred to me that I was not alone. My room was flanked by all of my teenaged friends, males included, there to wish my a happy day and bring me breakfast. You can imagine my instant horror as I grabbed at the blankets and pulled every available bit of cloth over my body. To this day all involved in the incident maintain nothing was seen…but I don’t believe it. Some of those boys looked rather red in the faced…

That’s about the most memorable I can think of at the moment. I’m sure in the years to come more stories of grandeur and excitement will be added to my list. For now I’m going to go and eat frosting out of a tube.

Is that last line some sick enuendo? I don’t want to know how you and Dan plan to celebrate your birthday.
