Oh, man. Sometimes I have to really scratch for a topic, but today one just jumped off the CNN headlines at me. Are you ready for this? Read on:

• “Empowered Rihanna Gets Gun Tattoo”

Now I realize this is the second time in a very short period that her name has been mentioned on this blog but DAMN, that’s too funny not to post. Let’s review, shall we?

So, for you non-pop-music-ites, Rihanna is the mother of perhaps the most annoying song ever strained into a microphone. Its about an umbrella. I think that’s about it. But she was in other, less musical headlines lately after being beaten to a pulp by her boyfriend. Bad news, eh?

So…here, in this article, our heroine has decided to make her own statement about her recent pummeling. Did she break up with the scumbag? Nope…well, I’m not sure really. But she did get a gun tattoo. This is a move of sheer woman power. No man will touch her. She’s got a small revolver etched forever under her right arm. You go girl.

Man, I wish I could be that “empowered”. The next time Dan tells me to get in the kitchen and do the dishes I’m going to march over to the nearest “parlor” and get a sponge tattooed on my….upper arm. Every time he irks me I will show forth in mighty tattooing until I have won back the rights Madonna so frivolously spent for women in the early eighties. Underwear over the pants. Really.

So thank you, black pop star. I feel that this move truly vindicates you and makes a bold statement against abuse. I close with an excerpt from an article from The Insider:

• [Tattoo artist] BangBang, who says they had discussed the idea for a year, gives his own interpretation of the design. “It’s powerful,” he says. “It’s protection.” The artist says that the singer was in good spirits when he gave her the tattoo last Thursday. “[She was] as happy as can be,” he says. “She’s really living her life really well. She’s got great friends and great fans.”
